TMS?
About
What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a breakthrough treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, offering new hope for those who haven’t found relief from traditional antidepressants.

TMS directly stimulates the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain associated with mood regulation, helping to restore normal function. Unlike medications, TMS doesn’t circulate through your bloodstream, meaning no weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or fatigue.

Benefits of TMS

  • FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression
  • Non-invasive with no systemic side effects
  • No anesthesia or sedation required
  • Resume normal activities immediately
  • Covered by most insurance plans
  • Over 80% of patients experience improvement

The Treatment Process
The Treatment Process

TMS therapy is simple, comfortable, and designed to fit into your life. Here’s what to expect at Memorial Park Psychiatry in Houston.

  1. Initial Consultation: Meet with our psychiatrist to discuss your history, evaluate your candidacy for TMS, and create a personalized treatment plan.
  2. Treatment Sessions: Each session lasts about 20-40 minutes. You’ll sit comfortably while the TMS device delivers magnetic pulses to targeted brain areas.
  3. Induction Phase: Most patients receive 5 sessions per week for 4-6 weeks. You can read, watch videos, or relax during treatment.
  4. Maintenance Phase: Many patients notice improvement within 2-4 weeks. Some may benefit from occasional maintenance sessions after the initial course.

What to Expect During a Session

You’ll sit in a comfortable chair while a small magnetic coil is positioned near your head. You’ll hear clicking sounds and feel a tapping sensation on your scalp—most patients find this easily tolerable. No anesthesia is needed, and you can drive yourself home immediately after.
